When a look, a word, a silence left hanging in the air
Can with careless nonchalance finesse all control of my day
And shuttle me helpless between joy and despair

And who is this person who has taken away all freedom
And at what cost to my equilibrium of mind
Where did sleep go, where appetite, ambition all lost?
Leaving just one all consuming passionate flame behind

Who is she to have to have such enormous power?
One who turns no other heads as she passes each day
Along the ways of the world, spectacularly indifferent
To all those features that so utterly hold me in sway

Such imbalance of perception finds no answer in reason
No delusion or trick of the mind either will help understand
Only that yearning need for intimate connection
To one other soul to walk with through life hand in hand

So how do I remain true and say what I mean
Though pretty words would be easy that billow and puff
A great wind of grandiloquence, exalting her worth
But what measure of a person is true measure enough

And how true is this love that so flatters and praises
Would my glorious prose sink to a hollow jest?
And baser selfish instincts consume me
When abandoned for another I am put to the test

I will not use love as a means for narcissistic indulgence
A mirror to amplify and reflect the vanity of the giver
For as time and infatuation soften and mellow
Such love will prove false and will fade and wither

I won’t look for flawlessness in some sculptured goddess
But accept the beauty in imperfection as a richer treasure
First the warmth of friendship before the heat of passion
With someone who just cares as my only measure
