Four years ago
I was 18, she was 14,
But we didn't care,
That was just a number
And we were in love.
Our love would last,
Though our relationship did not.
For three years
Our love remained,
And friends we stayed.
We broke up in 2004,
Now it was 2007,
And the war was still going on.
They brought back the draft,
Now I'm going over.
I remember I drove to your house,
I stood on your porch,
Holding my best friend close, you.
I couldn't comfort you
For your tears,
I was crying too.
I didn't want to lose you,
You said you didn't
Want to lose me.
I said, 'I still love you.'
'I love you,' I heard her say.
I stopped for a minute,
Wiped a tear from her eye.
'I know you're only 17,
But baby will you marry me?'
She stands on her toes
And reaches up to give me a kiss.
'Yes I will.'
Six weeks later, she took my name
In a little church
On a dirt road in the country.
We said our own vows,
We left for a short honeymoon.
'I'm going over next week.' I said,
'And I may not make it back.
But I want a kid
To come home to
When I'm granted my leave.'
I can't say what happened that night,
It was erased
By sweet red wine.
We got to the airport.
It;s June 20th, 2007,
Four years since I met her,
The next to last time
I would see
Her beautiful face.
We kissed and held each other
For a long, long time.
Before I walked off to board
The military plane,
I said 'Baby, I love you, and I have
For four years, since I met you
At church camp, June 20, 2003.
You know where I'm going,
That I might not make it back,
I want you to have our child,
Name my son
After me.'
A tear rolls down my face
And onto my Army shirt,
You say okay, you whisper in my ear
'Be careful, I love you honey.'
I took her hand
And looked into her eyes,
I lightly touched her cheek
Just before
I kissed her goodbye.
As the tears continued to fall,
I wiped her eyes,
And then wiped mine.

Now it's almost
A year later, February 14, 2008,
Valentine's Day,
And I've just been shipped
Back to the States.
I have two bullets in my chest,
I know I'm going to die,
They just brought me back
So I could tell my wife and son
Goodbye.
They come into my room,
I held my baby boy Bryan Jr.,
My eyes water.
I won't see him grow up,
I realize, as he says 'Da Da.'
I smile,
He knows his daddy.
My wife comes in,
She's been crying,
I reach out for her hand.
'Raise him right,' I say,
'Raise him to love the Lord,
And make sure he knows
How much I love him.'
'I will,' she says,
'I love you honey.'
I pull out the amulet with the pictures
Of me and her on our wedding day
And her and my son,
And turn it over
To reveal where a wouyld-be-fatal bullet
Had been deflected
Before it could get to my heart.
'Our love stopped this one' I struggle to say
Through my gasping for and and tears,
My time is near.
She puts her head gently on my chest,
'Kiss me,' I say, and she does.
I feel like I'm being lifted up
As sirens and alarms go off all around me.
I look down,
She can't stop crying, she's laying
Over my body.
Two doctors come
To take her away, to comfort her,
She hits one in the mouth
And screams at the other,
Then leaves my room.
I'm left alone, looking at my body.
I turn and see a light.
I'll go to it,
My Father in Heaven calls. [comments] => 4 [counter] => 191 [topic] => 25 [informant] => Solmyr1404 [notes] => [ihome] => 0 [alanguage] => english [acomm] => 0 [haspoll] => 0 [pollID] => 0 [score] => 0 [ratings] => 0 [editpoem] => 1 [associated] => [topicname] => MiscPoems )

My boyfriend is a Marine and he almost got deployed to Iraq. This poem really made me thankful he did not have to go, and it made me pray for the men that are already over there. I think it's about time we get our president out of office, and our soldiers home. Great job!

I love this poem.
As I read this poem tears they did fall for it was very sad!
One of my bestfriends sister is over in Iraq, and she is always scared that somethin might happen to her!
I have a friend who had died in a war a few years ago, it was very devastating, and maybe people will learn to look at soldiers through another perspective with this poem...
Thank you for writing this poem!
Jamie
