I was flying high in the sky
Combat ready
And didn’t know all the reasons why

Flying on a C-141
From Germany to another foreign land
A country that offered nothing
Only miles and miles of stone and sand

A soldier I was
All packed and ready to go
Ammunition loaded
Adrenalin flowing from head to toe

The plane had landed
The moment finally had come
This is truly a time
Not meant for some

The door had opened
It was time to unload the plane
At that moment
I really thought I was insane

Five meter intervals
We moved from the plane to the sand
Every step of the way
I held my weapon tightly in my hand

Laying in the prone
Pitch black was the night
Looking through my nods
To find enemy in sight

Hours later
The sun started to rise
Still no enemy in sight
Just our army guys

I am very fortunate
Our mission went so well
For the story of others
They do not wish to tell

I was only in that country
For a five-month stay
Having driven into Iraq
Fighting Iraq soldiers along the way

We passed by Kuwait
Where the Marines had re-taken all control
For our unit
The General had another role

We were ready to dismount
and fight the owners of the land
at any given moment
and any signal of their hand

We tried to protect the innocent
The woman and the kids
We didn’t want to kill anyone
And have that memory behind our lids

There was in-coming artillery
Planted minefields to go through
I love my country and chose to do this
Wouldn’t you?

I am proud to have been a soldier
And carry my pride in every way
I was very lucky to come home
And live my life away

Now I watch the news
It’s all about the 2nd Iraqi war
Once again I wish
It was me unloading out that airplane door

My brothers I stand with you
In honor of what you do
Stand tall and keep your courage
Soon this will all be through

Just know God is with you
Every step of the way
May he bring you home
To live your life away

To the families of the soldiers
that laid their lives to rest
Please just know
they did their very best

This war is a cause
In which everyone will agree
Somehow it is
To maintain freedom for you and me

We cannot have freedom
With terrorist roaming all about
Strapping bombs to their bodies
And feeding people doubt

War is not pleasant
Neither is a terrorist threat
We will make sure they go away
Now that you can bet

The life of a soldier
a hard task to perform
I wrote this in remembrance
Of Operation Desert Storm

Another war another mission
Combat ready you are
To all of us Americans
You are a shining star.

God Speed Troops!

Oh, and I too hope He's with them, keeping them safe.
My prayers go out.
I'm very honored to be in the presense of a veteran. Hats off to you sir! I wish more credit could be given to you guys nowadays. But my respect you have at the current moment ; )
Nicely written poem as well.

God bless,
Ellen
