I TRAVEL THIS ROAD EVERY DAY,
OFF TO WORK, FOR IT’S THE WAY.
UP THE ROAD AND TO THE RIGHT,
THIS LITTLE HOUSE LIES IN MY SIGHT.
WITH THIS LITTLE OLD LADY WHO ALWAYS STARES,
EVERY MORNING, SHE’S ALWAYS THERE.
ON HER PORCH SHE’LL ALWAYS BE,
AS IF SHE’S WATCHING OUT FOR ME.
AFTER SOME TIME I STARTED TO WAVE,
SEEMED LIKE HER FRIENDLINESS SHE TRIED TO SAVE.
BUT THEN ONE DAY I SAW HER SMILE,
AND IT STAYED WITH ME FOR A LONG WHILE.
FROM THAT POINT A FRIENDSHIP WAS GAINED,
AND I DIDN’T EVER KNOW HER NAME.
BUT I’VE COME TO CARE FOR MY NEW FOUND FRIEND,
AND I LOOKED FOR HER AS I ROUNDED HER BEND.
I LOOKED SO FORWARD TO HER FRIENDLY SMILE,
WHILE WONDERING WHAT STORY HER WRINKLED FACE WOULD TELL.
I THOUGHT TOMORROW I WOULD STOP TO SEE,
AND MEET THIS LITTLE OLD LADY OVER A CUP OF TEA.
BUT AS I DROVE UP HER LANE,
I FELT IN MY GUT SOMETHING WASN’T THE SAME.
IN MY EYES I FELT A TEAR,
FOR THERE WAS NO LITTLE OLD LADY SITTING THERE.
NO RAY OF LIGHT, NO WARM SMILE TO SAY,
MY THOUGHTS ARE WITH YOU, HAVE A GOOD DAY.
I FELT SICK TO MY STOMACH, I NEEDED TO CRY,
WHY HAD I NOT STOPPED EARILIER, ON MY MANY TRIPS BY.
I GUESS YOU NEVER REALIZE WHAT YOU HAVE UNTIL IT’S GONE,
OR JUST HOW POWERFUL WAS OUR BOND.
I ALWAYS THOUGHT I’D HAVE ANOTHER DAY,
AND I WISHED I TAKEN THE TIME TO SAY.
WHAT AN AFFECT SHE HAD ON ME,
AND WHAT A FRIEND SHE TURNED OUT TO BE.
YOU KNOW I DIDN’T EVER KNOW HER NAME,
BUT I’LL MISS HER JUST THE SAME.

Thank you Jeff. Your words are as touching as my memory. May all who read this be reminded that life is short, keep your eyes open, your heart soft & your time unhurried
