without warning
I'm shot

the fatal bullet
rips through my flesh
and pierces my heart

I collapse
and fall to the pavement

people around me
panick
one frantically calls the police
moments later
I hear shrill sirens

I no longer feel the pain
my mind wanders
I begin to think
about what I'll miss
after Im gone

my loving family,
my presious girlfriends,
being part of the volleyball team,
sitting in a dark theater in his arms,
chocolate melting on my tounge,
talking for hours on the phone with my best friend,
listening to my favorite song,
the slumber parties,
my favorite books,
watching the sunset,
taking a midnight walk,
vacationing at my favorite resort,
stepping into a pool on a hot summer day,
watching the stars,
taking a warm shower,
sleeping in on a Saturday afternoon,
my secret admirers,
doing a good deed,
being the center of attention,
standing in the rain,
my favorite movie,
my brotherly guyfriends,
family gatherings,
shopping,
winning,
losing,
climbing into bed after a hard days work,
rolling around in the snow,
spending time with my friends,
my obsession with animals,
being held in someone's arms,
a soft, tender kiss,
donating to the poor,
writing,
dreaming about my future,
perfectly folded notes from friends,
laughing until I cry,
the crisp morning air...

I snap upright,
beads of sweat
dampen my face

then I realize
it was all a dream

I smile,
out of relief,
and drift back into a deep sleep,
thanking God
I'm still alive
