Zinc White

Topic: MiscPoems

Zinc White is the colour of the Ivory Coast
Cote d’Ivoire
Of Christian, Muslim and other indigenous religions.

It is the colour of Hanuman
The Hindu monkey-god
Loyal and brave helper of Rama.

As the son of the wind
He can wield rocks
Remove mountains
Fly in the air
And seize the clouds.

Zinc White is the colour of the I Ching
The Book of Changes.

Earth, fire, metal, water and wood
Are all Zinc White at the core
As is the notion of Ying and Yang.

It is the colour of the Italian corn-goddess Ceres
Searching for her daughter
Passing from land to land
Across seas and rivers
Until returning at length to Sicily.

It is the colour of ungrateful soil
Of dead cattle and broken ploughs and failed seed
Of too much sun and too much rain.

Zinc White is the colour of toads endowed with the faculty of speech.

And it is also the colour of St. Ignatius Loyola
The Spanish soldier who founded the Jesuits.

Zinc White is the colour of Borneo
With its long history of Hindu, Buddhist and Islamic kingdoms.
The colour of ritual prostitutes
Healing with the help of familiar spirits.

Zinc White is the colour of obscenity, absurdity and superstition
The colour of women yielding themselves to gross indecencies
Taking an insane delight in being beaten.

And it goes without saying that it is also the colour of the Hindu bigot
Closing his fingers upon his palms
Until the nails grow out the backs of his hands.

Zinc White is the colour of the Pueblo Indians
It is the colour of scented air and painted valleys
Of far echoes and brooding doves
The colour of beauty in a box.
