I feel like such an outcast
Treated like a leper or a pariah
Even my so-called friends
won't trouble their heads about me
And yet it seems such a short time ago
when we were inseparable.

How did I end up here?
Deserted, abandoned and forsaken
Left to my own devices
My pleas for help fall on deaf ears
I beg, I beseech, I implore
yet people seem insensitive to my cries.

From time to time
through the madding crowd
I catch a glimpse of a familiar face
yet no one comes to my assistance
Nobody rallies round
giving encouragement or moral support.

Strangers show me even less respect
elbowing me aside
jostling me
snubbing the desolate wasteland
that once was my ego
And all I can do is watch
as they leap ahead of me
triumphant and victorious
as their effective demands
gain the upper hand
and they taste the sweet smell of success.

It isn't that I don't try
but others seem to break through in front of me
With ease they play their hand well
appearing in the right spot
at the right time
almost by magic
cutting the ground from under my feet
This must be the loneliest place on earth.

Until recently
I didn't have a care in the world
Life was great!
I was having fun
Maybe from time to time
one of my pals struggled
but I knew he'd be alright
I knew he'd see it through it in the end.
There didn't really seem much point
in me lending a hand
And now it's my turn
and nobody so much as lifts a finger.

I stand here
bereft of hope
almost at the point of despair.

I can see someone walking over here
Perhaps I'll give it one more shot
I'm able to catch their eye
They're looking my way now
This could be it
I'm going to go for it.

"Yes?"

"Six large beers please, love."

Brilliant! Some other sod's turn next.
