"PLEASE TAKE MY HAND"

When I was three, you took my hand.
Lifting me from the sandbox, helped
me to stand.
When five rolled around, I waited for you.
You took my hand, and walked me to school.

I'll never forget Junior High, it was so new.
"Take my hand," you said, "I'll get you through."
Great big halls, lockers with locks, I got lost.
Older classmates shoved me, and bossed.

I'd have given completely up if you
hadn't been near.
You'd say, "Take my hand in yours,
have no fear."
Graduation, wobbling high heels, nylons
first time worn.
You helped me across the stage, I felt like
a newborn!

Moved to a different town for High School.
I didn't want to move, my heart was blue.......
"How will I ever pull this one off?" I asked you.
"Please just take my hand, with you,
I'll move too!"

Piano recitals, scared stiff, fingers frozen,
wouldn't move.
"What if I forget in the middle, they won't approve?"
"I can't hold your hand while you play, but, I
can guide your mind.
Relax, now, I'll help you not to forget, I'm
loving and kind."

My wedding day, scary, unsure,
am I doing right?
"Please take my hand dear, no need
to be contrite."
"I've never had a baby before, what am
I going to do?"
"Hold tightly to my hand, an experience
you'll value!"

"Are you sure I deserve this much love,
and happiness?"
"Of course you do, I want all mankind to be happy, without pain, goodness!"
"Oh My God, I think he's going to die, leave
me behind!"
"He's very ill, I don't take loved ones, life is not
promised on this side, nor assigned."

Three little kids all alone, this is utter
madness, no family.
I can't do this, I'm too weak, not
self-assured, lamely.
"I'm going to grab both hands now,
are you ready?"
I'll pull you to your feet, I'll guide you wisely."

And so You did My Close, Dear,
and Loving Friend.
My hands with enlarged knuckles,
twisted....extend.
"I'm called "Ancient of Days." I'm much
older than you,
It's your heart I see not your hand!"
"Your heart entwined with mine, you weren't
left all alone, I'll care for you firsthand!"

I was 33 when he died, and now he has been gone for 33 years, during all those 33
years, He's never once left me alone, but continues each day to dry my tears.

Connie, my friend, this is such a beautiful piece. What a loving man Bob must have been. This tribute to the man who has carried you through the loss is one of your finest. He is with us through all hard times. God is good and never fails us.

Love always,
Rita
