Array ( [sid] => 37424 [catid] => 1 [aid] => mick [title] => visions [time] => 2004-03-05 02:11:50 [hometext] => i'm not sure how to describe it, but i actually kinda like it [bodytext] => i was not asleep
but i was not awake
my breath was laboured
and in my head
i heard a sound
like the striking of a large bell
that echoed on and on and on

before me appeared
a blinding flash of Nothing
a tear in the fabric
of everything we know

and in that tear
i saw...

i saw a large clearing
in a thick forest
it was nighttime
but no stars shone
the sky above was swirling
with clouds that were blacker
than the lightless night itself

and in the clearing
row after row
of human tombstones

humans
breathing, screaming, weeping humans
protruded from the sick grey earth
buried from the knees down

naked, they were
and their torsos were covered in wounds
as i strode closer
i saw that the wounds were words
the words listed everything that the person
had ever killed
from bugs to hopes to trees to people
every single life revoked
was carved into their living flesh

they screamed and scrabbled to be free
but in this hell
they were damned to commemorate
everything that they had destroyed

the world grew dim
and for a moment
i was Nowhere
literally removed
from any and every place of existence
seperated from everything

i believe that
in that moment
i was in paradise

when i was retrieved
i found myself on an empty beach
it was not day
but it was not night
the sky was simply not there
so it was hard to say when it was

a soft ambient light from nowhere
lit the scene
as i strolled calmly down the beach
not knowing where i was going
but knowing just the same
the soft light lit upon a million glistenings in the sand
the path ahead glittered like a sea of crystal
or perhaps shards of broken glass
awaiting bare feet such as my own

as i walked
i was flanked by two figures
when i turned to look at each
i found only blurry shadows
as if they were there and i was not
or vice versa

they spoke to one another
but their voices were like cellophane
softly crinkled underwater
now and again
a word or phrase would make itself known to me...
".....abyssmal......
...endless path....sterility.....
their planet...no longer there....
floating in space....
not dead....just dreaming..."

though i couldn't follow the conversation
somewhere deep inside
a part of me understood it all
and that understanding
was like a boulder on my back

suddenly
the shadows fell to shrieking
(it was an awful noise
imagine the sound a bee would make
if it could scream
then imagine a sky-blotting swarm
emitting the same sound)
and the landscape itself began to blur and tremble
a voice like thunder breaking on jagged bone
tore through the air
and the clouds parted
to reveal a descending creature
whose size and impossible proportions alone
would surely have driven me mad
if i had not been sucked back
into the vacuum paradise

seconds or eons passed
as i floated in Nothing

i must have fallen asleep
for i felt as if
i had been stirred from a fitful slumber
to find myself atop a tower
that gave a limitless view in all directions

and all was aflame

the sun above burned angrily
though it was not the sun
but something alien and vengeful
a hateful orb that burned like hidden anger
spitting fireballs of fury at the earth

i looked below me
to find the entire planet ablaze
here and there, flameless patches peeked
revealing themselves as scorched pieces
of wasted soil

buildings, forests, mountains, oceans
all was awash with an alien flame
so much oxygen fueled the fire
that little was left for the fragile remnants of humanity
those that did not burn alive
were victim to the loveless torture
of suffocation

bodies were piled higher
than the impressive flames themselves
(the mountains of corpses were unbelievable
the tops reaching for the sky
then plowing through the endless red wave
that the heavens had become
towering up and out of sight)
a global pyre
lit by an unseen hand

an old man stood beside me
i could not say how long he had been there
nor was i sure if he truly was there
or just some mad delusion

as i stared at the dying world once more
he spoke softly
almost sadly,
"this is what is to come
and there is nothing that can be done
to stop it
you can't undo what is already written
this will be the work of The One..."

he paused
and i could feel his ageless eyes upon me
telling me wordlessly
that he knew
that i understood who he meant

"when his memory fades from the world
and all who remembered him have died
he will come again
as he did before
he will come and destroy the world once more
.......
only this time
he will not take back his actions
he will not repair what is broken
.......
he will only stare madly at his work
and laugh"

as if on cue
laughter filled the air
coming from nowhere
yet coming from everywhere

and in that laugh
was endless joy

the world distorted
and tore itself to pieces
pieces that slowly burned themselves up
leaving their occupants
to float, helpless, in space

and as my tower dissolved
i cried out
but whether the cry was one of sorrow
or one of victory
i'll never be sure
for as i fell up towards the dying sky...

...i woke
in that same empty paradise... [comments] => 3 [counter] => 408 [topic] => 13 [informant] => Cancer [notes] => [ihome] => 0 [alanguage] => english [acomm] => 0 [haspoll] => 0 [pollID] => 0 [score] => 0 [ratings] => 0 [editpoem] => 1 [associated] => [topicname] => DarkPoetry )

Truly a vision...if somewhat the "puff the magic dragon" kind. The meanderings of the vision is nice but I tend to lose focus and meaning after a while because of its lenght. Surreal and nice but could perhaps use some tightening. But anyway if you want a vision....this is it....reading your poem I too feel like slipping in a trance...nice job except for the abovementioned possbile problem. Then again these are just my opinions...

Excellent piece. Your imagery, as always, is astounding.
