This has been a tear filled night for the pretty lady
Who laid in fear all night long
She needed so badly to tell him
She was sorry to have treated him so wrong

As the shower warms her body
And the evil of the night is washed away
She is determined to make it right
Long before the end of the day

She brushes her long beautiful hair
And removes every tangle and knot
Today her hair will be perfect
She knows it will trigger a soft spot

The road goes on forever
As she cruises up the interstate
She rehearses what she will say
As she opens his front yard gate

As she watches him working in the yard
She is glad that he has not seen her yet
“God he is beautiful”, runs through her mind
She wants to continue to forget

As he stands to face her
His hands are dirty and rough
But his face is lit up like a candle
She cannot say, “I am sorry” - fast enough

As he kisses her, all her fears are gone
And he carries her through the house
She can remember the first time
It was at her parents’ place, she was quiet as a mouse

“God! I love you,” they scream to each other
They collapse into each other’s arms
Tomorrow will come way too soon they realize
Let’s pretend this our last night on earth, keep me safe from harm.

No door closing quietly behind him
No lonely shuffling down the long dark hall
She crawls back into his bed and turns off the light
She does not even see the shadows on the wall
