For the first time I sit and watch this epic tale,
An awesome movie…of courage deception and hate.
Violence and bloodshed in almost every scene,
Action aplenty…by modern standards…popular yes even great.

But it struck me not long after the viewing,
Nothing in humanity has really changed.
We continue to kill…continue to hate,
Only now we can do it on a scale almost deranged.

Instead of arrows and swords…we now have bombs,
Nuclear and biological weapons of awesome power.
Where hundreds were killed in a day in the times of the Gladiator,
We can kill a hundred thousand in less than an hour.

Our technology is frightening…we can destroy the world,
Modern hi-tech barbarians in every sense.
And it is the same old hate and bigotry and unforgiveness,
We are still guilty…of this fact there is no defence.

So as I consider the movie…I find it so curious,
I enjoyed it…but violence I will always detest.
It sits uneasy on my mind…a bitter sweet phenomenon,
My soul wrestles…with the humanity with which I am blessed.

Or do I have like everyone…have a darker side?
A peace advocate…yet with a fascination with violence and death?
Am I a hypocrite?…my emotions grapple with the realization,
I am human…capable of anything…it takes away my breath.
