Amidst the foliaged soil, Vietnam,
Vietcong guerrillas barricade,
Beneath the ground the tunnels swam.

The nickel silver shine of moons,
Whose deathly flying pellets dart,
But death is real amongst platoons,
The stench, I draw in breathless art.

Vietnam back in sixty four,
And sixty five, uncloak the dead,
The phantoms scythe, exist in war,
Proclaiming death its swiftness bled.

In heated battle far from home,
Your love explodes my hearts desire,
Entombed with shrapnel's falling dome,
My love remains in this expire.

One word makes me think you were there.

I survived the blitzes in 1940 and 41 and spent many days as an auxilliary fireman
on rescue and recovery work and later in the RAF saw sevice in Malaya.

The word that brings it all back is "stench"

Newsreels are sanitised heroic misrepresentations of the sordid reality .

You come as close as words alone can.

Very good Wesley. No doubt Vietnamese poets are also extolling the bravery of their men in taking on and defeating the overwhelming technology, economic and political power of America. They died selflessly in their hundreds of thousands. This is as it should be. War is murder by another name. Good work!

You went to Nam out of love,
love of your kindred kind:
a harsh wind blowing at your back
from the "exemptees" staying behind.

Good poem,
Lionel
