King Dasaratha the ruler of Kosala
Went to the forest haunt of the beasts
On his horse, with his men and dogs.
He killed many beasts in the forest
Not yet satisfied even after a big hunt
He was searching for few more beasts
Once unmarked by all his attendants
Tracking a stag through the deep forest
He reached the riverTamasa, the haunt
Of sages, on his horse that was fatigued;
From waters there rose from a water pot
One that’s filled a sharp and loud sound,
And thinking it to be the trumpeting
Of an elephant, the king at once loosed
An arrow in the direction of the sound
As he was sure of his skill at archery
Even by hearing he could shot his prey
“O father!” anon he heard a boy’s cry
Shocked at, he sought to find its source
Among the reeds there he discovered
A sage’s son with jar in hand, transfixed
By his shaft; the king too felt thru pain
As if a dart had lodged inside his heart
Dismounting his horse the king enquired;
Propped against jar, with faltering words
He told that his name was Sravana and
His parents were blind living in the forest.
Urged by him the king atonce bore him
With barb still undrawn, to his blind parents
And rehearsed what unwittingly he had done
To their only son and the state in which came;
Sore grieving the mother and father caused
The killer to draw out shaft from the breast
Of their child, who expired; where upon
The couple beating their chests cried aloud
The old man cursed the king with the very
Waters of tears he had gathered in his hand
“O king, when age comes on thee, thou too
Shalt die of grief for thy son as now we die,
Bring fuel for burning our bodies too, as no
More we live in the world without our son”
The old man cried and fallen on the ground
Left his breath, his wife too died with shock
And then as his attendants joined, the king
At once did bidding and returned to his city
Bearing the curse deep graven on his sad heart!

Oh Venkat, you gave me goosebumps and made me cry. This was such a heartwrenching tale and you painted it so vividly I swear I was watching the whole thing! Out of all the poems I have read of yours this is my favorite! Beautiful, tragic, heartwrenching, sad, and you are not only a poet but a story teller at heart! I commend you.

You love a challenge don't ya? Well done, well done!

Kie

Sadness deeply engraved in his heart. I would hope so. I believe the killing of animals for pleasure is a sin. Do we, as humans, feel the earth was created for us?
The animals could live on this earth without us, but we cannot survive on this earth without the animals. They perpetuate the trees and the grass and foods we eat to survive. Man has killed more animals than animals have ever killed man. Sad.
