Slap loudly against the empty street—
Tonight fog is my only friend.
The air, heavy with cold,
Chills the body as well as the mind.
A sensation of shivers
Pulses through me;
Fear has joined my journey.
Strange houses leer out at me
As I wander into unfamiliar territory.
It seems my friend has led me astray.
Suddenly another echoes my pitter-patter

—I am not alone, not alone—

My heart pounds brutally against my ribs,
And a heavy rasping permeates the air
As the houses fly past in arrays of blacks and grays.
I feel myself being whipped around
By a drunken gust of wind.
Struggling past its icy bite I make my way forward,
My back turned to the slurred sound
Of my name on its ragged breath.
The inky blackness tries to swallow me up,
And I, in wide-eyed wonderment,
Question what else is lurking in the darkness.
Finally a familiar house emerges from the gloom

—Panic subsides, subsides—

I have beaten the foes nobody knows
And the shivers are gone, gone.
