Everyone always had fun when you were near.
The holidays were the best because you came,
Now that you're gone they will never be the same.
Grandma, I miss you so much,
I miss your soft and gentle touch.
I never want to forget the memories when I was a kid,
All the games we played and everything we did.
I always wanted to help you clean and cook,
I loved it when we sat down and read a book.
I stayed at your house every chance I got,
We would chase after bugs and see how many we caught.
Grandma, I'm sorry that I grew older and we grew apart,
That horrible memory will always be in my heart.
It wasn't that being with you wasn't fun for me,
I had so much to do, we were both always busy.
We made plans but decided to wait,
Then you got sick and it was too late.
Grandma, why did you have to smoke?
Did you think lung cancer was just a joke?
But that was no excuse for me to run away,
That probably would have been the best time to stay.
I remember that last night as if it were yesterday,
When everyone was there and in a hospital bed you lay.
I remember when they said that you would die,
We had one last chance to say good-bye.
They said you wouldn't recognize me in bed where you lie,
I said I didn't want to see you like that as I began to cry.
Grandma, I am so sorry that I was not there,
I hope you didn't think that I didn't care.
I am sorry I wasn't by your side in the end,
When all my life you were there as my friend.
Grandma, I still see you in my dreams some nights,
Sometimes I am a kid again and we are flying kites.
Other times it is just as if it were today,
But neither of us are too busy to talk all day.
Grandma, the memories of you I will always carry,
Even though grandpa will soon remarry.
Grandma, I wish you were still here,
I wouldn't take advantage of someone so dear.

Poetry is much like a great photo, a single "moment in time" capturing many feelings and emotions. Yet, they are very alive; creating stirrings within the readers who form visual "pictures" of the expressed emotions within the Poem. ©
