And my daddy, who wasn’t afraid
Of anybody,
Was scared of him

Jimmy loved rock and roll,
Screaming guitars and alcohol,
Played bass guitar and trumpet,
Wrote me songs and poems

Jimmy was a musician,
A hard-core condition,
I remember one Halloween,
He dressed up like Gene Simmons
From the rock band “Kiss”,
—I liked to kiss Jimmy,
Run my fingers through his hair,
Feel his tongue squirm around mine
With his trumpeter lips vibrating

Jimmy was older than me,
Much more experienced,
Daddy would have built a fence around me,
But I would have climbed over it
Just to be with Jimmy

Daddy grew eyes in the back of his head,
Every time Jimmy and I sat in the den
Pretending to watch TV,
His hand on my knee,
And daddy forgetting his magazine,
Then his glasses or anything
So he could re-enter the room

Jimmy liked to squeeze my boobs
When no one was looking,
I felt sneaky, and let him fondle
The new-found woman in me,
And in exchange, he’d put my hand
On the bulge of his blue jeans,
And I’d squeeze him back

Daddy would have had a heart attack
If he’d known, I was responsible
For Jimmy’s bone rising,
And my hormones were soaring

Jimmy and I were exploring
All the bases, one by one,
He was patient, loving me,
And I was coming around, toward home plate,
Daddy hated Jimmy

It took a year and half before I gave in,
Before I gave Jimmy my virginity,
And turned into a woman
In the back of a borrowed Chevy Van,
The night the band played
Kiss songs and we drank beer

I snuck home, spent hours looking in the mirror,
Making sure Daddy wouldn’t see
What I gave Jimmy the night before,
That I loved another man, —not necessarily more,
Just differently than Daddy,
Jimmy had long hair
