Sacrifice

Oh! Victory came swift, - triumphantly
Our heroes conquered Baghdad in no time,
But now endurance in adversity
Crowns the high task and renders it sublime! .

Heroic fighters at last homeward bound
Joy in their hearts to see their kith and kin,
But in foul treacherous ruse the Fedayeen
Brought down their helicopter to the ground.

Our hearts are aching for the brave Sixteen
Who fought for us in such a thankless land,
Were murdered by the Saddam Fedayeen,
The archetypal villain miscreant.

Take heed! beware of Ramadan, -the feast
On which the ground does open wide to spit
From varmint bowels forth the terrorist
To wreak the works of hell and lowest pit

From noxious vermin let no one retreat,
But root it out so that it can not nurse,
nor breed more snakes - Lord do command them eat
And crawl on bloated bellies licking earth.

Great heroes brought the sacrifice supreme,
For us,- Oh what tremendous sacrifice!
But the good Lord smiles on the valiant team
That pleads for all of us in paradise.

What do we know of this word, the poor souls and their loved ones know only too well. I am sure they would be thankful to know that such poems are out here. Thanks Elizabeth got it in one.
