Array ( [sid] => 25651 [catid] => 1 [aid] => mick [title] => Only Yesterday [time] => 2003-10-23 21:54:51 [hometext] => This poem is about how if I was happy before a certain event happened, I'd probably not be happy now. [bodytext] => And I tell myself it was only yesterday
Where the mountains covered in green used to lay
But I know it’s not yesterday
All the time there had flown away

I met a boy who knew what birds croon
He knew the wind’s words,
He knew the story of the moon
He had the whole world resting in his hand,
Only yesterday
And now he’s a playen’ in field of gray
With an army of evil things in his way
And he doesn’t remember golden lights
He doesn’t remember starry-eyed nights
But he did only yesterday

And I tell myself it was only yesterday
Where the mountains covered in green used to lay
But I know it’s not yesterday
All the time there had flown away

I had a friend named Mona, and she had a mile bright beam
Knew proverbs of the elders,
And would be caught in a dream
She had a heart so full, you thought it never could be
Only yesterday
And now she’s a sleepin’ in a shabby shed
Hearing vile voices and thoughts in her head
And she don’t remember all the mornings of bliss
She don’t remember feeling sunlight’s kiss
But she did only yesterday

And I tell myself it was only yesterday
Where the mountains covered in green used to lay
But I know it’s not yesterday
All the time there had flown away

And I was lost in a purple mountain haze
Nights being mornings, weeks being days
I had no one to run to when the chill set in
Only yesterday
And now I remember how the valleys of gold
Used to make the seniors younger and the youth old
And I shut out the best thing that came my way
Only yesterday

And I could have known the song birds croon
I could’ve known the wind’s words
Or the story of the moon
I could have had the world resting in the palm of my hand
But that would have been gone today

And I could have had a mile bright beam
Know the proverbs of elders
And get caught in a dream
I could’ve had a heart so full it couldn’t be
But that would have been gone today

Only yesterday, was I lost and confused
Only yesterday, was I battered and bruised
Only yesterday, there was not a pain I hadn’t felt
Only yesterday

And I tell myself it was only yesterday
Where the mountains covered in green used to lay
But I know it’s not yesterday

Poetry is much like a great photo, a single "moment in time" capturing many feelings and emotions. Yet, they are very alive; creating stirrings within the readers who form visual "pictures" of the expressed emotions within the Poem. ©
