Array ( [sid] => 25256 [catid] => 1 [aid] => mick [title] => The Last Sound [time] => 2003-10-18 02:41:35 [hometext] => I lost my sense of hearing today at a firing range. [bodytext] => I woke up today,
floated through the hours
doing art and thinking like
a civilized contemporary.

I heard and spread rumors
and soft, yellow music,
and talked for hours
to my new best friend.

I laughed and smiled a little
as I grew closer and closer
to this fresh, young mind
so similar to my own.

Then we parted and
went on with our days
in the usual fashion, breathing
lighter with the weight off our chests.

Myself, and three friends
went down the highway
to the shooting range
way out yonder.

We played with the pigeons
and a few apples and a
twenty-four pack of grape-flavored
Big K brand soda.

They all blew up pretty and it was fun.
Between the bullets and my new friend,
there was no time to worry about the
petty drama going on in my life.

I pumped shotgun shell after shotgun shell
into the powder-scented air, followed
by a few “pot pot pot”s from that old
greasy pistol before we moved upwind.

We sat at the rifle range, and somehow,
two of our party had lost their earplugs,
and one of those wanted to shoot, so I
gladly gave up my hearing for him.

I was standing about thirty feet away,
watching the target closely, waiting
for it to explode in some brilliant display
of carbonation and grape flavoring.

My friend was taking what seemed like hours
to load up and fire off his shot.
I saw him playing with something on the gun,
so I thought it would be okay to unplug my ears.

A quick glance at the target,
a quick glance back at my buddy,
and a sudden realization that he was ready and firing
and my eardrums stood exposed to the violent percussion.

It sounded like, I guess a half of a balloon pop,
because the noise wasn’t over before my hearing was.
A simple “PA!…” was the last thing I will ever hear
in my suddenly different life.

I caught myself whistling just a couple hours ago,
that’s when it finally sunk in, and I started to cry.
I realized that I will never hear music ever again,
and it gives me a strange sense of personal mortality.

I looked at the cans and bottles and apples
and found that I was picturing them as livers
and kidneys and brains, dripping blood, not grape,
rather than the grown-up playthings they truly were.

I learned two things today. I’m going to die,
so I’d damned well better enjoy this while it’s still here,
and also, the most valuable and beautiful sound in the world
is the “PA!...” you hear before the world goes silent. And the day started so well..I hope this is just a temporary loss but if it isnt..Im sorry..and if its any consolation, loss of hearing makes the eye sight better..you will find things different and see them in a whole new light..great for the pen ;)(i know this sounds silly but its true...besides best you can do is turn a negative into a positive)
I truly am sorry about this happening to you
Sharon

I like this one, too. Weird, and strange, and sad. (My husband believes he lost his hearing in the ear closest to his shot gun. No one thought about ear plugs in those younger days of ours.) No way to bring 'life' back once it is gone. Friend, Bizzy
