falsifying your remorse
to nothing more than a lie
that won’t hold up in the morning
when your tongue is swollen
and the bad habits beat at you
like the wings of death
worn out and ravaged by time
consistent with your living
to excess day after day
until you have robbed them all blind
still expecting more compensation
because life has treated you so badly
unanswered your prayers
float just out of reach
and you can’t call them back
so you sit underneath them
drink until empty and fill up on pills
swerving into the night
you’ve lost your reflection
the drummers are drumming
insistent rhythms demanding
attention and melodies from inside your head
where you are shattered
by the accounting of losses
you never expected to end up this way

That one certainly spoke to me. I not only see some of myself in this one, but like you, a lot of people I know. Great piece of poetry. Keep writing.
