Array ( [sid] => 23410 [catid] => 1 [aid] => Mick [title] => LOOKING TO THE STARS! [time] => 2003-09-18 02:45:00 [hometext] => Why do the majority get caught in their grief?
Searching and never finding any relief?
Some seem able to come through and even smile.
How? Have they a special number to dial? [bodytext] => How is it some survive and thrive?
Others seem to die inside, never to revive?
'Tis there a special gene?
Perhaps some characteristic unseen?

In my years of living, and watching
I've observed many people disposed this way.
Look on their faces, those of all races.
None of us take life on without sadness,
over death and morass.
Yet, just a few seem to live through the horror.
Their spirits go untouched, and continue to soar!

I've thought about this constantly.
I've even been asked, "How did you survive?"
By all laws of nature,
You shouldn't even be alive!

I've studied, pondered, and even prayed.
Looking "The Demon" constantly in his eyes!
Why me? Why so very few, unaffected, left unscathed.
Yet, never realizing why their heart never dies?

They feel the beatings life hands out.
Their demons torture and reside all about!
Ripping their hearts from their warm chests.
Sexually molesting most without rest!

They grow tall and strong, with smiles in their hearts.
With each sorrowful experience their souls
design marvelous "Restarts!"
They accept, and agree to whatever they have
no other choice but to do.
If they can change it, they will.
But if not, they still refuse to go "downhill!"
What buoys their spirits, their intestinal fortitude?"
Same temptations, same music, same interlude.

Life can kick them, especially when down!
Life will suck away self-esteem, planning breakdown!
Life doesn't expect them to make a rebound.
Life is surprised, some even astound!

If they manage to live, there's never a frown,
Twinkling eyes, no sadness 'round
them can be found!
Please I must know....don't keep me in the darkness.
How do these courageous people live
with such sadness?

'Twil surprise you to know....it's not courage
that helps them to stand!
It's a different attitude, a different perspective,
a different homeland.
For these few peoplein their minds
reside among constellations.
Among the stars where only "broken hearts"
may make reservations
Oscar Wilde did state, "We are all in the gutter,
but some of us are "Looking at the Stars!"

So what you are saying then is:
They don't face reality?
They "by pass" all their life's tests?
They just pretend, and are hypocrites?
They are blind and they cannot see?
They see, but can't feel anything but beauty?

That's not what I'm saying at all:
They face reality, just like you and me!
They do not "by pass" any of life's tests!
They do not pretend and are not hypocrites!
They can see the bad....but have chosen to live with only hearts of beauty!

Wherever you find these people
You'll find smiles, no complaints,
nor downheartedness....
They have even refused to carry around their scars!
They walk among us, but they have anchored
their hearts on the stars!

For some who are "God People"
We looked to our creator, never losing sight.
We know, we too, have to wrestle with life's fight!
But we looked to the Heavens where He hangs
His stars, while He protects our hearts
in His Light!

I wrote this poem from an article I found in the
Sunday Newspaper.
It was written by Meredith Vieira. Who is the host of "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?"
When she was a reporter for CBS news she wrote a story about a poor boy in Chicago with a big smile on his face, even though he had no father, and absent mother. Yet, he never once succumbed to the debauchery all around him.....Because he was always "Looking At The Stars!"
I have a copy of her story, if you would like to have it just email me and I'll send it to you.

Who am I to argue Oscar,
Meredith also sees quite far,
I, for one keep on smiling
Sitting at my local bar.

I complain not, see no reason
Listen, will you, do you hear?
How can one complain at all
At his local, drinking beer?
