Array ( [sid] => 23027 [catid] => 1 [aid] => Mick [title] => sleeping beauty [time] => 2003-09-10 19:35:00 [hometext] => an ironic twist on the classic fairy tale. it has a double meaning. i'm my own worst critic and even i enjoyed it. [bodytext] => sleeping beauty
forever dozing
destined to wake to joy, supposing
the right prince comes along

lying, trapped
within a dream
careless in sleep, so it would seem
but inside she cries, praying for release

hopefully, if all goes well
she'll be rescued from this hell
by her knight in shining armor
her valiant prince, with lips of silk

in her dream (nightmare) she's married to
a blue collar, white trash slob
who doesn't appreciate her
and beats her 'cuz he hates his job

as she does the dishes
in their financed single wide
she silently cries, as she so often does
o'er some long forgotten loss inside

so long inside those tower walls
postponed memories atrophy
resigned to her new life of tears
she forgets the sleeping beauty she used to be

years of abuse take their toll
denied the fairy tale life lived by some
her husband is cheating, the kids all left home
only alcohol can bring the numb

her beauty wilts, unmourned by eyes
other than her own crow-footed orbs
and dreams of death steal in with ease
promising an end, promising peace

as the depression deepens
it slowly drives her mad
and our sweet sleeping beauty
makes the only choice she ever had

in the bathroom of their trailer
sleeping pills bring her sweet suicide
seconds before the long awaited kiss
that would have brought her back to life [comments] => 4 [counter] => 192 [topic] => 13 [informant] => Cancer [notes] => [ihome] => 0 [alanguage] => english [acomm] => 0 [haspoll] => 0 [pollID] => 0 [score] => 0 [ratings] => 0 [editpoem] => 1 [associated] => [topicname] => DarkPoetry )

Cancer,
Absolutely loved it! It was dark, but not just for the sake of being dark, you know? The words just flowed. It was such a great twist- the dream was fabulous. Personally I like the topic of this one better than the topic of "I Read the Bible for the articles", but I should shut up about that, shouldn't I? lol =) ; )
Anyway, you gave dark poetry some beauty and color, and I enjoyed reading this one a lot.

Love Joy and Peace,
Jellybellyprincess

Cancer,
Great write, i loved it. You put a dark twist to a happy fairy tale..which makes this poem interesting to read yet still had its meaning. once again great write.

Always,
deathwriter
