turns to a cold cement abyss.
A small child becoming a shadow
of cold fright down below!

The weather is cooling, reaching,
touching, and leaching,
the warm blood from my veins.
Memories buried, surfacing remains!

Canned goods neatly stacked,
'gainst far north cement I thwacked!
Moving down wooden stair case.
Heartbeat increases, adrenaline pumping,
preparing for the chase!

Jump, don't look, face "IT!"
With back against cold cement......
Can't be still, keep one eye peeled!
My blood is slowly congealed!

Scoot silently, carefully, yet with a pace.
Grab the can of corn, don't turn, race!
Can't observe now, as stairs unfold......
"This is when it will happen, I know,
It's "Me" I've told!

This very close, OMINOUS, big brown 'IT!"
Who needs a name, when you have no shame?
I don't have to look, I saw it move!
If I look, I'll be terrified......and if I don't,
I'll be overtook, defied, "On the steps she died!!!"

My breathing accelerates, legs a'blaze.....
Missing some steps, tennis shoe betrays.
Small child, secret imagination,
Heart bursts, scared senseless, weak malaise!

Be stoic, completely controlled!
Hand over the corn, be brave, be bold!
"Why, Connie Sue, must you race up those stairs like that?"
"It's fun!" (I'll never tell, she knows where "IT" is at!

And besides, it is kinda' fun.
It is rather thrilling, and exhilarating now!
But when you're the age of "pre-schools"
Insignificant objects such as furnaces,
balancing off walls, become huge
mysterious, mystifying saccules!!!

Some 20 years lived, I returned to the scene.
I was ask to volunteer to fetch the corn with cream.
I sneaked down the same stairway, as before,
I looked right at "IT," and smiled as I plotted my encore.

Grabbed the corn again, jumped for the steps,
punishing shins, I stopped at the top!
My mother was watching, like a brick doorstop!
"Even after all these years Connie Sue,
Why do you do what you do?" (I'll never tell!)
She knows 'IT'S" still down there!
"Oh, just 'cause it's fun!"
But......... Beware!!!

My first attempt at Mystery!
As usual, I can't scare you,
without scaring me!
I have no choice,
I'll have to stick to History!

This poem sure is creepy
For a poet not so spooky
See how much a pen can do
You scared me out of my shoe!
