Array ( [sid] => 21732 [catid] => 1 [aid] => Mick [title] => Harvester of Souls [time] => 2003-08-11 04:05:00 [hometext] => "We are here. And fear? In the night... black. In the wet vulnerable dark...? Should we fear...?" [bodytext] => It took place on a thunderous night
when the heavens opened wide
We all ran out to see the lights
In a tidal wave we cried

No one could believe their eyes
as we wandered in the street
all petty news now out of sight
our faces white as sheet

It wasn't known where they came from
another star they said
it wasn't fair what then went down...
the raising of the dead

The black beams just kept on coming
relentless day on day
in the heavens an awesome humming
the spectres watched their prey

Within each beam the victims rise
oblivious of their plight
torn from graves and to the skies
the end of age-long night

We the living could only watch
we were like zombies too
as the spectres slowly took their catch
and built their gruesome zoo

Then came the day of silent skies
when the linguists spoke to all
we’d lost a game of cosmic dice
and now two thirds must fall

An ultimatum came down on silver disc
two thirds must now be given
to fight was extinction, an awful risk
acceptance brought New Eden

We had no choice our hands were tied
2 billion to live
4 billion to die

Stunned we were as the linguists droned on
we listened although our senses were gone
to the tale of why the Spectres had come
and the meaning of that deadly hum

They cropped the spirit and processed it
within their silver ships
residual energy, dust, bone and bit
brought life to their lips

The ancients had most and this was taken
now was the time for the living
not an ounce would be forsaken
no earthly escape from this giving

A list was supplied of those to die
in detailed denomination
every facet known, no chance to survive
a brutal extermination

Artists, writers and poets topped the list
with philosophers, intellectuals and scientists
All were to fall like ripened corn
not a sentient mind was to be missed

A new dark age on Earth was now begun
Endless night would forever cloud the sun
The fields of Man stood silent, waiting
The Harvester of Souls had come [comments] => 6 [counter] => 163 [topic] => 43 [informant] => steeleyes [notes] => [ihome] => 0 [alanguage] => english [acomm] => 0 [haspoll] => 0 [pollID] => 0 [score] => 0 [ratings] => 0 [editpoem] => 1 [associated] => [topicname] => oops )
