Seems it sprang from nowhere…this very small alien,
Around the world it swept with incredible speed.
Killing hundreds…this miniscule insurgent,
Seems at last from its threat we are freed.
The world's medical authorities remarkably rallied,
And brought this dangerous organism to its knees.
The frightening matter is the question of when,
Are we going to discover yet another virulent deadly disease?
Now you may brand me cynical or at least suspicious,
But I feel these biological threats indeed must have a source.
And I can't help but ponder is it in fact we that create,
These viruses and diseases…by our haphazard biological course?
It seems new diseases just 'appear' with such regularity,
It is alarming…and many are so lethal with no cure.
I grow more curious…as each new medical dilemma surfaces,
I grow more convinced…we are at fault…of this I am more sure.
For it is we who now tamper with genetics and modified foods,
It is we who fill our skies and soils with nuclear waste.
It is we who digest antibiotics with every morsel of meat,
It is we who modify our food…'engineered' for better taste.
It is we whom produce our acid rains and vast pollution,
It is we whom produce the Thalidomides and chemical cocktails.
We pour millions of tons of chemicals into our soils and seas,
Are we responsible for most disease…and the suffering they entail?
Have we in our haste and greed over-stepped the biological boundaries?
Are we in fact concocting a whole new sphere of disease by our ways?
Have we stepped into an area…where in fact nature now rebels?
And unleashes illnesses that will possibly end mans dwindling days?
We have contrived and manipulated and engineered and distorted,
We have polluted and disturbed…to the 'scrapheap' nature we send.
All that the natural order has taken eons to refine and perfect,
We have now radically altered…and more disease is the consequent end.
