The two ways to think
The two ways to dream
In the mind or in the body

I choose the way of the heart mind and soul
Greed and spite will choose the latter
In the end it simply will not matter
The ways in which we leave are forged by the physical
But what we leave behind is more than material
It is stamped onto the souls we touch and the minds we impress upon
The blind man wishes for the gift of sight
The healthy man wishes for a gift of gold and riches and fame
Oh what we can learn from those without and what we can shame for those with

When the end is near, when the beginning has come and gone
Where the sunset burns the hottest, where the arctic bites the most
Blessed are those without, ignominy to those who don’t know the difference
The privileged may rule the earth, but the deprived will inherit it, or so the wise one says

Ok, so I'm a self-described "flow junkie" and you had me going there with your latter/matter pairing (L6 & L7). Then you threw me all off and I had to go find a bottle opener to see if maybe a beer would get me back into your groove. (Too Austin Powers? Let me rephrase: back into the fantasy world of your poetry.) The concept appeals, the details don't jibe. For instance, in the beginning, there are only the mind and the body. One line later, the mind has formed some sort of coalition with the heart and soul. Dear friend, the mind thinks the heart is out of its flipping gourd...alright? The heart contains entirely too much emotion for the mind's taste. The mind is all logic and ideas. Yes, yes, they seem to find a common ground in dreams, but that's really just the mind humoring the heart in order to maintain good relations. The soul on the other hand could give a crap about good relations with the mind OR the heart OR the body for that matter. The soul knows it's in this for the long haul and the rest are just fleeting manifestations...temp no0bies if you will.

Enough of the philosophy though, I thought the poem was good. I'm not sure where L14 & L15 thought they were going, but they didn't get there and the poem seemed to treat them as more of a double carriage return than anything else. The healthy man didn't get healthy by being a money/acclaim grubber, that's for sure, but the blind man certainly desired his sight and the wise one DID say that the deprived would inherit the Earth or something more or less along those lines.

It was a poem more than anything else, and one of the things that some English teachers don't seem to want to admit is that poetry affords the common man the same luxury of expression as is enjoyed by kings. Consider yourself king for a day or more. Decent write.

Daf
