chasing a dream that could never be held
told each other pretty lies like you/'/re the one
answers to our own lies is what compelled

am i the one was our constant doubt
seems no assuage would ever be had
since we didn/'/t learn how to do without
we said anything to chase away the sad

collateral damage is the usual wartime lie
sadly, for us, that is all we have to show
neither of us could ever just say goodbye
takes more courage than we had, to go

so, in misery, we find our solaced heart
dancing to a lonely song neither will buy

I say that all the time. Love is NOT all we need. I really relate to this. Especially loved the opening because I think I/'/ve done that...squandered all my second, third, fourth chances...."chasing a dream that could never be held".... Loved this!

The title says it all.
Your words draw memories for me! It is far more difficult to leave a relationship than to stay with what is familiar, even if it is toxic.
Fear of the unknown can immobilize us.
Everyone has a swift answer when asked how they would change their life. And a million reasons for not doing so.
We justify failure. Your poem is a challenge. To think about where you are standing. Well done!

I like this.....I think this piece deserves to be looked at again with an eye to polish and flow. The bones are good.
