where he now, so frustratedly, dwells.

Disillusionment wraps him in a spinning parcel
of detachment; a centrifugal pulling from reality.
Reality? What is reality?
A naively/imagined norm?
A lottery of grotesque wealth or starvation?
A nightmare from which there is no waking?
A torrent of horrific images, creating a deluge
in which, even the strongest cannot swim?

Even he, despite his arrogant posturing,
had sought that godly glow of peace,
believed by multitudes, delivered to none.
Perhaps he/'/ll try one, last/grasp attempt to clutch
that elusive straw of unfathomable belief.
A desperate lunge to deny the rising
maelstrom of ever/increasing lunacy.

No, look, there gallops a herd of pale horses,
intent to leave the shattered bones of altruism,
empathy, peace and kindness, trampled into
the mud of man/'/s vacuous existence.
Cynicism, given the relentless stampede
towards the cliffs of self/destruction,
is justified and, hopefully, an eye/opener
and salutary warning against the apathy
and delusion of the blindly optimistic..

A very interesting piece. A very deep thought which took me a couple of times reading it to fully understand. I agree 100% with your thought here.
Yes, there are a great deal of optimistic people that are just flat out blind to the world around them but there are those that are optimistic understand the downfall of the world that we now live in and just try and find something good everything that is going on around them. But without some form of optimism
how dull and depressing would our lives be?
Great piece and I look forward to reading more of your work.

I like your story and its theme. There is no middle ground here. We are one or the other.
I speak for the optimists today. There will always be someone to find fault -- so I feel free to find favor instead. Its more fun, less work, and ingratiating. Optimists are popular. Pessimists are leaders.
I don/'/t think I/'/m delusional; I just look deeper than most to find the good stuff. Am I misleading myself? It is a matter of opinion as your poem confirms.
You provoke thought, and you can/'/t be a writer for a better result than that!

Hard not to reach this state of fractured trust in humanity, life, meaning, hope ... You sure have a way with words and you are generous with setting the tone and creating imagery.

Indeed. So good.
