Sometimes I cannot sleep
the fear of death scratches from within
I just don’t know what to do
my nerves are wearing thin

Not knowing how I should feel
as reality has faded away
I dread another panic attack
happening on any given day

I can’t stop this scratching
from an itching soul inside of me
It causes unsteady breathing
causing me to awake erratically

When the demons touch my soul
I am not aware, as I am deep asleep
Until I find myself walking in circles
my heart pounding, the reaper has come to reap

Once again
the reaper doesn’t get his way
I make it through these moments
and I live yet another day

I don’t take medications
they are another fear for me
So I continue living this life
with a tormented soul and demons that will not flee

If one of these days
from my sleep I do not awake
I pray to God I have gone to heaven
and my soul the demons did not take

Hey there. This poem is elegant in describing what so many of us feel. Yes,m I too lay awake and bounce in and out of sleep. Sometimes, I pray for sleep to quiet the demons scratching me from the inside out. Then, asleep, I want to be awake to slay the sleeping demons...so after a while, I fear sleep, I fear being awake, and there is no third option, which terrifies me.

I like your poem, Wayne. It definitely hit a chord with me. I will make a point of reading your posts. Keep at it, my man!

Mike

Waynster: This poem resonates with me. so much of what you describe visits me in my sleep. I usually wake up because I am not breathing - (I have asthma. It is scary).
The best I can wish you is a peaceful nights sleep. Thank you for sharing this with all of us. I/'/m sure many will identify!

Very descriptive and very well written. One of those thoughts and feelings you can only truly understand by going through it - definitely connects with the reader.
