Turning them out in the bitter cold weather; The old and the young huddled together.

Until someone noticed the windows aglow; On many a building, all vacant you know.
All over their city; they came to know; That places of worship, used two days a week;
Were empty, but warm, and a safe place to sleep.

The city requested that that each of them seek; To open their doors to those on the street;
When the shelters were full, and snow fell at night; And their buildings were empty, would that be all right?

Or else they could donate some of their taxes; that no one collected because of their status.

Each had their choice, to shelter or pay; To serve the less fortunate in their own way.
Some wrote out checks, and some housed the poor; And winter nights found them huddled indoors.
In rectories, bingo halls, churchyards and more; In safety and warmth, asleep on the floors.

Just a light in a window; helped this town find; A message of caring for all of mankind;
One brave little city alone in the dark; Found for itself the light in its heart.

Beautiful poem and story Jaye.
We have talked about this before and I agree.
Sadly when you introduce mental illness into the equation that is when the issues arise.

Many choose to stay outside because of this.
We as a nation need to address the mentally ill instead of dumping them out in the street.

This would be a fine Christmas season write as well.

Let no man write my epitaph, I mentioned this movie made in 1960 before, or perhaps you remember Robert Kennedy,
when just after Martin Luther King Jr. was killed, he recited this poem to the crowd, my favorite
poet was Aeschylus, who once said;
Even in our sleep, pain which cannot forget
falls drop by drop upon the heart,
until, in our own despair,
against our will,
comes wisdom
through the awful grace of God.
The movie was about a retired Judge who
became a common day drunk and then lived
his life with all the dropouts of society, a mixed up
thorn on the side of society, these people live
and have small children, and in this movie they
those misfits banded together to protect a child
but they could not, due to the circumstance,
And its a remarkable film, way before its time.
Sure there are churches, I know soup kitchens,
and housing where you try to give people lost
some residence so they can find their way back
but the problem is big, bigger than most people seem to understand.
I know this guy who exercises every morning in a park,
and I have tried to reach him, but you cannot reach him in his given mental state.
He/'/s just a guy with mental problems, used only as an example. In broad terms the problem is so much larger than that.
yeah it takes a nation.
