G’day – it’s Australia Day!
commemorations under way
for recognition and display,
(except for those who have their say
that it really is Invasion Day).

slap a chop on the barbie,
crack a beer or two
make jokes about refugees,
that’s what we seem to do.
a day off work, a leisurely swim
celebrations to make you grin;
all hide an age-old sin
—the spoils go to those who win.

yes, it’s a day of mourning,
for those who lost it all
Terra Nullius was a lie, for
the unsuspecting Aboriginal.

and a day of celebration
for those lives, torn asunder,
who found a second chance
in this amazing land,
Down Under.

I didn’t ask to be born here,
my ancestors came in chains;
so I shed a tear for what was lost,
and ponder what remains.

G/'/day is right! I love the way you set the tone with your local expressions. Puts us in the mood for your message. The last two lines leave us to think about celebrations in our own countries (very similar) as more than an excuse to barbecue with friends.
Although you have written this from a personal and sincere prospective, it is universal in meaning.
Thank you for offering us a reminder of the holidays we all take for granted.

brilliant! the faith is in
the spirit bestowed
in the fabulous land
with all the crazy creatures
the birds were all silent until
somebody spoke
cunning and spactacular
in come the refugee
out goes all the guns
Some kind of freeness
in the geology
in the aboriginal
for those sent away
maybe they were indigent
maybe the crime was
they could not foot
their bills
I think the Aussie
might know
more than any
what the slaves
should never forget
I dunno
mate, but I
love your poems

And, all the kinds
of different people
and creates
down under

You folks put smiles
upon my face
and are well worth
a listening to

Peace!

I have to agree with Emy, very thought provoking indeed.
I/'/ve seen documentaries on the hardships of those who first arrived in Australia all those years ago.
The irony is for me, as a Brit, that you/'/ve made far more of a success of things than we ever did!!!
