We wore our woodland greens
to do our desert chore
Many miles from our base in Germany
landing in the night not knowing what was in store

young and excited to go
Anxious to see battle
how little did I really know

It was not Vietnam
it was not World War Two
The death and carnage was not as bad
this war was something new

There was death
there were times I was scared
At first I was excited to go there
and now for my life I had feared

Different situations
changed the way I would feel
Some things I would see or smell
my youth those moments would steal

Burning oil wells
smoke so thick, hard to breathe the air
There were bodies burned to a crisp
all you could do is stare

The sight of the bunkers
booby traps left behind
Iraqi soldiers were giving up
but were leaving surprises for us to find

This war was different
but something was in the sand and air
It’s killing so many Veterans
many years later with no despair

Driving over a land mine
hearing that sudden shatter and bang
First dawning a chemical mask
as my ears still rang

Seconds moved fast
but yet time moved so very slow
Making the right decisions
in a moment as crazy as so

There were other events
that changed my life I say
Being left in the middle of the desert
while my unit just rolled away

Many hours
pure darkness but voices to be heard
Scared to death
M16 locked and loaded is what I endured

Then comes the day
a day that never leaves my head
When three small kids run in front of my truck
and two of them, their death I dread

The dust was thick
stopping was not an option for me
It could have been an ambush
something I was not able to see

These things I live with
for 27 years, each and every day
I was young and wanted to serve my country
but now have a high price to pay
