[hometext] => Did she deceive me; or did I deceive myself?
[bodytext] => She was sitting on the sidewalk with dirty tangled hair; With extended hand and friendless smile, she asked me if I cared. I grabbed a shopping cart and went inside the store; Wondering how many others had turned her down before. Standing at the checkout with two carts full of food; My conscience got the best of me, and so I took its cue. Before I left the checkout I had a sandwich wrapped; And as I left , I passed her, and placed it in her lap. Neither of us said a word, she clutched it to her chest; I watched her from my car; I thought Id done my best. She disappeared inside the store, sandwich in her hand; And came out with a bottle, for such had been her plan. She traded food for alcohol; and drank it straight away; A bottle full of whiskey, Id given her today. I don’t give food or money to the homeless anymore; To help them stay I know Ive left them worse off than before. The gift I gave her was another day without respect; I have no way to give her the things she needs to get; A shower and a place to sleep; a way to earn her daily keep; Her promise to be there on time; a promise she keeps to remind; Herself that she is worthy of, the trust, respect, and selfless love; She so deserves, til she retreats, off this life of city streets. One day perhaps shell understand that those who left her empty hands; Hoped one day that in her place, they’d find shed left an empty space.
