Life itself can be so benign
A sad face is no crown jewel
For it has no sparkle and shine
Again it's just so benign
A misspoken word
Can never resign
Like the sun high in the sky
It may fade but never go away
We waste so much time
In search of all things divine
Worship the good
Even build a shrine
We live for today
But much to our dismay
We fondly look only to yesterday

To quote what I'm led to believe was a quote from Kierkegaard:
"Life can only be looked upon backwards, but must be lived forwards."

Perhaps the only fond way we can look otherwise is in moments of grand joy, ecstasy, and/or the self-imagined world we wish to provide for our children. Ah, but even still, those times are far outnumbered by the fondness of the days of old.

Nicely done James. :)

Benign is such a lackluster place to be!
You remind us that we are too busy living to notice the present, until it becomes the past and all its lovely colors run to grey.
Perhaps it is safer to embrace a memory--we can control the outcome!
But today's moment is a mystery, swirling about us in a cloak of urgency!
Unpredictable and not to be trusted…
(until tomorrow, when time transforms it into a photograph whose flaws will fade with every returning.)
