How comes a home to be?
Square footage?
Kohler shower faucets splashing every nook and cranny?
Parquet flooring; starred, stacked, intrinsically stepped?
A three-D illusion every bit as real
to plebeian staircases one may tumble down;
tax brackets ill immune to anguished echoes wept.

Laughter, not as cruelly echoed back as marble,
still echoes nonetheless off forty year old paneling;
repeated designs of smiling faces, demons, trees
or whatever one chooses to envision;
mud walls can give as much if one looks closely
with curious eyes and gentle touch.

Chandeliers?
How many beads of sweat dropped on tiered gleaming light,
cleaned of blood and agony born in their creation prior
to polishing crystal clear
for “Ooh's” and “Ahhs” of undeserving Cretans;
money, insulating fools from scraping fear that comes in
the night softly, but not so lightly they don't hear.

The largest house with square footage
beyond count
echoes more the emptier
for the lack of light and soul;
barren owners comforting themselves
with jewels and pretty things
that don't caress back.

Give thee my love as I give thee,
and our castle is this shack. [comments] => 6 [counter] => 160 [topic] => 2 [informant] => Invierno [notes] => [ihome] => 0 [alanguage] => english [acomm] => 0 [haspoll] => 0 [pollID] => 0 [score] => 0 [ratings] => 0 [editpoem] => 1 [associated] => [topicname] => LovePoetry )

"he buys his woman everything
he buys her cars and clothes and diamond rings
...what she really wants is his love sometimes"

Excerpt from 'A love that she can count on'
by William (Smokey) Robinson

This song clip is the best comment I can give your poem.

I like it! No one knows why, or what makes it.
One makes a good example, they throw it out
in the dirt. Hopefully out rolls a good home
and no matter how they get around later on
they just can't figure out why.

Some day we just want to spend the day with a good
man like you buddy!
I like this a lot!

Peace!

Great poem
The first line tongue tied me a bit. Once I deciphered it, I got it.

You're right. But you know material things aren't always the things we see. I'd rather pile up things I cherish and own a big house then burn my money on vices or be a party king. That's being materialistic as well and in the end you have nothing........
Very thought provoking poem!

James

The house premise is a clever analogy to remind that we are not what we have!
I think your phrase "tax brackets ill immune to anguished echoes wept" should be on every mortgage contract!
My absolute favorite vision is ""beads of sweat dropped on tiered gleaming light"--never will I look a chandelier in the face again without thinking of that!
Small luxuries suffice. Love dwells where we choose to make it welcome, be it pup tent or palace.
Awesome.

It is apt that you should have written this. Someone you don't know and never will know has asked about you. Her philosophy is: I'd love you in a croft on Skye, I don't need a palace. 'Home is where the heart is.'
