The old fashioned girl

Early to rise, daylight is burning!
Schooled at home; such was her learning.
Bible study on the porch swing;
Hope chest waiting for a gold ring;
(She was an old fashioned girl).

Buttermilk biscuits rolled by hand;
Orchard fruits she jarred and canned;
Churning butter soft as silk;
Filling pails with sweet cows milk;
(She was an old fashioned girl)

Darning socks and mending dresses;
Braiding rows of tangled tresses;
Gingham blue and buckled shoes;
Bows and ribbons, precious few;
(She was an old fashioned girl)

Bonneted to church on Sunday:
Hang wash in the orchard Monday;
Knowing he will find her one day;
Pinning all her dreams on someday.
(She was an old fashioned girl)

Heaven knows how hard she tried;
Learning at her mother’s side;
Good girls never drink or swear;
Gamble, lie, or take a dare;
Cross their hearts and make a sign
Safely tucked in bed by nine.
(She was an old fashioned girl).

One day came a fancy Dan
City dweller full of plans;
Walking thru the pastured farm
Down the meadow arm in arm;
Made her laugh, she saw no harm.

Brash and bold his scheme designed;
Offered up blackberry wine;
Waltzed her through the saloon doors;
Danced her cross the polished floors

Til her tousled braids were spinning
Surely this could not be sinning!
In the street the sun was setting;
Bets were made on her forgetting!

Mother’s words rang in her ears;
He beseeched her heed her fears!
Thus, to mother's wish resigned;
They jumped in bed at half past nine.

Very cool! I love the imagery. As Tim said you have a gift for spinning a story to poem. I always love your poems.
