I dedicate this poem out of Honor and Respect to every Vietnam or Combat Veteran!

"Thank you for your service"

Just before dusk
the reddish sky slowly fading away
My fears start to grow
my nerves have a price to pay

Locked and loaded
firm grip on my weapon is what I do
Watching the shadows in the distance
not knowing how long, before they are next to you

So dirty and smelly
no bath taken for quite a spell
I could be lying next to a dead animal
and could not even tell

Fear in my mind
my eyes wide open to full view
Prepared and ready for what comes
it is what I must do

Many hours of darkness
in a world civilians would never know
I signed up for adventure
but to this place I did not need to go

Suddenly out of nowhere
one of those shadows closer than should be
My instinct took over
so I could protect my buddy and me

One more lifeless soul
a pity it has to be this way
He chose his destiny
when he tried to take my life away

Images forever embedded
still fighting that war, even though many years already gone by
Everyone thinks they have a cure for a Vet
they never walked the walk, and will never know all the reasons why
