Song for a Woman

The blizzard with its winds and snows
that bruise the air and bite
the tree, the flower – falls and flows
to nothing in her light.
What doomful stars must circumscribe
the nature of the earth,
that minions of the cold divide
the living from their birth?
The world has winter everywhere:
It jumps from faces, thrives
in instants shocked and broken, bare,
yet Spring in her’s alive;
For beauty’s fairies hover round
the bright air where she is
and mercy forms a vision’s sound
to purify what’s his.
A vernal creature, made for sure
of birdsong, warmth and roses -
Titania’s prototype, as pure
as summer’s sky or Moses.
For something in the universe,
within the stars and spaces,
Becomes in her as words or verse
give form to mental graces;
Nor could man ever dream of god
If woman were not present
And beauty heals the wrath and rod,
Makes kings of simple peasants.
