Bumps and bruises, put away and filed
I have been beaten like the red-headed step child
People have grabbed the dagger and fired in deep
Me, I just stand there and weep

You are the hammer, I am the nail

Been called so many names, it's downright insane
I know I will be the brunt of a profane laced tirade
If one day, I'm acting quite odd
You'll know my smiles are a facade

You are the hammer, I am the nail

Been assaulted so many times, there is not much that I fear
Allow me to sit here and be perfectly clear
Been hurt so many times, I've lost energy to hate
I've worn the mask long enough, it has become my face

I wish I could stand here and boast
But not, for I am the whipping post
Said so many times, it is old hat

You are the hammer, I am the nail

To be bashed, either physically or metaphorically, and become numb to the hurt, is an absolute tragedy. You express the despair of such in grand poetic style.
