Open my eyes as I try to stifle a yawn
Reach to open the curtains with a snap
Bright light hits; scramble to close the gap

Wander down the hall to start the day
Don't need to see as I know the way
Coffee in hand as I scan the paper
Curious to read of time's newest caper

Sounds so normal to say the least
It would appear I've mastered the feat
Yet behind the innocence grows despair
You see, sometimes life doesn't play fair

Hidden beneath this quiet calm exterior
Beats a heart that has always felt inferior
It's true I've tried to fit in with the rest
Played by life's rules and tried my best

As another day arrives to teach me a truth
It seems no matter how much I try to dispute
The past has a way of commanding its site
Darkness within extinguishes the bright

Multi-colored images of past hurts and lies
Memories of black clouds hiding the skies
May not be physical but it hurts the same
Damaged by humans playing hate's game

I know letting others' evil scar me is wrong
I know I've yet to sing my greatest song
With each tear created in a memory's pain
There may be happiness hidden in its rain

Many times I've wanted to let go and give in
Overwhelmed by the image that I can't win
But when the sun awakens me yet once again
I realize I'm still standing; myself I'll defend
