I have heard many tales of this mysterious thing
There have been articles and some songs to sing
Years of research I did before I started this trip
A backpack with food and some soda to sip

Traveling many miles through the deepest woods and valleys I did go
Not so much of a hint of this creature did anything show
Weary, tattered and ready to end my hunt
Sitting by this little bridge I heard an odd grunt

Curious about this sound I slowly looked around
I discovered strange prints in the sand on the ground
Recalling my studies and trying a trick or two
I attempted to communicate, “I am here to meet you”

Stunned, I heard a reply in a language I understood
“I cannot meet anyone, as I am not pretty and banished to these woods.”
Still amazed I had even come this close, I was not about to leave without a peek
I said it was an understanding of your inner person that I truly seek

It took a little while before I heard a reply
“Ok, only if you promise to be gone before the morning sky”
We spent the night speaking about anything and everything of which we could think
I spotted the early signs of dawn and I could feel my heart sink

After all of these hours spent, I still had not a clear view of this thing called a troll
No one would ever believe that I had spoken with one; they would call me a fool
I had to take one last chance and ask for a special favor before I left
A quiet yet firm reply let me know that I was not in a position to make a special request

As I started to make my way from this place
The troll said, “Wait, I want to see your face”
As the sun rose above the mountain and lit the clear blue skies
I think we were both astonished to see trust and admiration in each other’s eyes

This creature that I had so wrongly thought was a hideous monster of the night
Was without a doubt the most gorgeous being that had ever been in my sight
She was as beautiful on the outside as she was deep inside
She made such a lasting impression I told her they were wrong and she should never again hide

I hope she takes my words to her heart
That this day will be a new start
She has so much to offer the world at this time
Of the few friends I have I am SO proud to have her as one of mine

I like this poem. This seems to be your take on Shrek or is it something more?

Really cool....a short story in this poem. Very neat the change in perspective and good job on showing this.

I enjoyed this read and thanks for sharing it.

Really love the way this reads. I read another poem here tonight that was much like reading a fairytale from childhood and this poem was similar but towards the end it seemed like it had a more hidden meaning about someone very real to you that may be low with the self confidence.

Anways, whether that's right or wrong, still quite a joy to read.

Thanks,

Tim
