Where went the souls of
Thomson, Plath and Poe?
If souls indeed there are to go-
Mortal coils, shed by choice
Words inadequate to voice.
The poems and prose- not enough
To quell the pain of life’s cruel stuff.
Did they see what I see now?
Did futile musings rank first among thoughts last
By shotgun, booze, an oven’s gas?
Did relief at last push aside despair
At going somewhere- just not here.

Certainly a well written poem.
Dark subject matter, but that only brings it in closer to me.
Suicide always brings with it a "why?" Which may only be understood by the one in the action. What haunts a person to drive them to their end? What stops a person?
Regardless, and to stop myself from rambling, this was a good read.

I knew a former classmate who commited suicide a few years ago. It's so true - who knows where they go & what they see?

"If souls indeed there are to go-"
If we believe death brings us to a better place, we have to hope that we have souls!
My favorite line is "Words inadequate to voice". This epitomizes the dilemma of suicide, and your words convey the utter hopelessness of the struggle within.
That "going somewhere-just not here" would "push aside despair" is the formula that justifies the decision. Your words are chilling in their perception of the thought process that leads to the tragedy.
Except for your introductory disclaimer, your reasoning make the solution seem logical. And that is your gift; to convey us to a forbidden thought and allow us not only to explore it; but accept it.
You take the sting out of what we might not have the courage to visit on our own. It is preventable; and you offer us the gift of your willingness to embrace and understand, before we avoid and condemn.
