A Maverick’s Heart.

A Maverick licks the wounds of War in the quiet of reflection
And knows that the battle lines are blurred.
Years of good service hang in the balance and trust and loyalty
Hard work and a heart full of care are no match for those who
See the lines of paper cut out people.
Reputation in tact amongst the people, knives drawn by those with
Their own agenda,
Confusion from vulnerable eyes already glazing over in self defence.
The General has resided and my anger and pain has risen as a river
And burst its banks to leave silty residue of justice bubbling in self
pride.
Conscience is my shield and protector and there are those who have
Tended my wounds and still stand beside me but as with all wars its
The vulnerable and weak who pay the price.
A heart of courage within me would fight the world even though with
My own sensitivity the price is too high.
Justice is my driving force which compels my voice and self doubt is
The mirror that reflects my maverick a constant reminder that I can’t
Abide by the rules and yet I have protected life and it has thrived.
As I stand firm in defence the war will get bloodier and on paper I
Cannot survive and yet when death’s voice calls a Maverick home in
My bucket full of sins I will be at peace with my years of Care.
