beside the oldster at the bar.
He noticed how one grizzled hand
was wrapped around the bottle.
The other never strayed far
from the holster at his side,
or from the carved stag handle
of the gun residing there.

His parchment face looked old;
his blue-gray eyes had lost their spark.
Then as he turned and looked toward
the young and handsome cowboy,
he spoke, his voice distorted
by the decades of misuse
of whiskey and tobacco,
which were now his only friends.

He told of younger days,
of how he’d worked his plot of land.
He’d built a future for himself
and for the girl he married.
Of how they’d raised three children
now all young men strong and proud
and how his wife was taken
in the prime of her sweet life.

He sadly bowed his head;
a tear ran down his ravaged cheek.
Remembering brought back the pain
he thought he’d long forgotten.
Then gently but still firmly,
the young cowboy took his arm
and slowly with compassion
led his aging father home.

I love poems that tell stories like this one, especially ones with the old west involved. The emotion towards the end was spectacular. Thanks for the read
