Array ( [sid] => 173661 [catid] => 1 [aid] => mick [title] => Nullarbor Spirit [time] => 2012-08-22 23:17:08 [hometext] => The Nullarbor Plain divides Australia from East to West and is traversed by the Eyre Highway. This highway is a conduit for freight both East and West and crossed by a steady stream of road trains (huge trucks with 2 or 3 bogies attached). [bodytext] => NULLARBOR SPIRIT
(Across the Nullarbor)

When the road seems never ending
And with thoughts of home in mind
And the engine is complaining
But he pushes ever on
As the West is where his heart is
And what he misses most
So he must keep rolling onward
Across the Nullarbor

And he knows that when he gets there
By the front door she’ll be waiting
To hold him in her arms once again

But the road keeps getting longer
And it seems he’s getting nowhere
And the lights ahead are fading
As he slowly drifts away
And the only sound he’s hearing
Are the bogie wheels still spinning?
And the smell of leaking diesel
And the wail of sirens near

And he dreams of when he gets home
By the front door she’ll be waiting
To take him in her arms evermore

Cos he lies there by the roadside
In a creek bed south of Dubbo
With his life blood slowly draining
With every breath he takes
But his spirit’s on the way home
Now his heart has stopped a beating
So he must keep rolling onward
Across the Nullarbor

And he knows that when he gets there
By the door she’ll be waiting
To hold him in her arms ever more

So forever he’ll keep driving
On that long road never ending
Dreaming of his childhood sweetheart
Across the Nullarbor.

NULLARBOR SPIRIT
(Across the Nullarbor)

When the road seems never ending
And with thoughts of home in mind
And the engine is complaining
But he pushes ever on
As the West is where his heart is
And what he misses most
So he must keep rolling onward
Across the Nullarbor

And he knows that when he gets there
By the front door she’ll be waiting
To hold him in her arms once again

But the road keeps getting longer
And it seems he’s getting nowhere
And the lights ahead are fading
As he slowly drifts away
And the only sound he’s hearing
Are the bogie wheels still spinning?
And the smell of leaking diesel
And the wail of sirens near

And he dreams of when he gets home
By the front door she’ll be waiting
To take him in her arms evermore

Cos he lies there by the roadside
In a creek bed south of Dubbo
With his life blood slowly draining
With every breath he takes
But his spirit’s on the way home
Now his heart has stopped a beating
So he must keep rolling onward
Across the Nullarbor

And he knows that when he gets there
By the door she’ll be waiting
To hold him in her arms ever more

So forever he’ll keep driving
On that long road never ending
Dreaming of his childhood sweetheart
Across the Nullarbor.

Oh yes, loved it - what a journey!
Could see the empty never-ending roadway,
hear the engine, smell the diesel, feel the
sadness.
