“Back in my day”,
These are the words you say.
When your stories baffle me,
And I consider who I want to be,
To be like you.
You survived the destruction of a war,
It was ferocious and created new law.
You did it for us, put yourself into the slaughter,
For my mother, you daughter,
But you survived.
“I could never be so brave” I say,
You smile while I play.
The innocence you see bring you to tears,
And you know my age draws near.
You wave to me.
“I did it so you would never have to”,
These words recycle in my mind just like new
Age took you from me many years ago and I wish you could see
I have become the person I wanted to be,
I am brave, just like you.
