I hope you enjoy this little tale, best read on a dark night perhaps? [bodytext] => Twilight came to walk her dominion, stretched shadows merged into the black cloak of night
A day heavy with the chains of long journeying now forced to its inevitable conclusion
Dim tavern lights beckoned, lantern beacons to claim the weary traveller
Warmth and comfort from winter storm that rushed through cobbled streets like seeking demon

Clear thoughts ground into the powder of abstract and broken, sipped away with sweet numbing nectar
Rain slapped panes of leadened glass, lashed its threat against the heavy wooden door
Coccooned inside the wander stowed himself in the furthest corner of the room
Alighted on the wooden bench, barely lit by dancing candle

The quiet caressed his ticking mind, poured calmer water on the sea of life's turmoil
Eyes began to glaze and images once clear began to muddy into blurry outlines
Through the smoky haze a figure light of frame avoided any capturing gaze
Unnoticed yet by the stranger whose troubled face she came to look upon

A strange intoxicating scent like nothing other clung heavily to the scene
A chill from cooler air drilled down his spine, shuddering senses wakened to the childlike frame
Who now melted into the high-backed wooden chair to the right of the cold stone hearth
Pushing back the black shawl to reveal long flowing locks of burnished copper

She spoke, lilting tones flowed from her lips as summer brook running over cool pebbles
Her tale told almost in whisper of a love lost to the brutal whip of stormy, unforgiving sea
Of cold Winter nights scanning waves, lamplit and forlorn from the high twist of cliffs
Dommed forever, escapee from all but the bleakest emotions, clinging to unwanted emptiness

As deep night wrapped itself more tightly around the battlement of doors and windows
The distant boom of thunder distracted his eyes, momentarily he turned to witness the shard of white light
And in the blink of an eye his companion was gone, save for the dark silk that had been her invisibility
His mind reacted, he stood, took the shawl from the arm of the chair and raced towards the door

One face greeted his confusion, placed a careful hand on the shoulder of the stranger in his keep
"Many pass this way", most just once, their destiny beckons in other towns, perhaps in other lands
The one who left you this is not unknown to me, I knew her well in life,Elena was her name
No more than dust, she has years since passed, fell from the rocks this very night, so many moons ago" [comments] => 5 [counter] => 336 [topic] => 32 [informant] => puppy_dog_eyes [notes] => [ihome] => 0 [alanguage] => english [acomm] => 0 [haspoll] => 0 [pollID] => 0 [score] => 0 [ratings] => 0 [editpoem] => 1 [associated] => [topicname] => SadPoetry )

Hi Steve,

Ghostly, creepy, mysterious - I love all that
stuff, and as I progressed through the verses
I felt that something/someone intangible was
about to become tangible - and you didn't
disappoint me.

Great story - well told - well done!

Tommy
