What in my cup does lurk, unknown
And dark, a heady aroma flows
From the bitter drink from beans sewn
In lurid, tropic climes, who knows?
Sip, ah yes, that sweet surge of life
A buoyant air to me is brought
And strange the sleep I fought
Is banished now replaced with vigour.
Coffee I hear you say, what’s this?
A hearty change from tea, dismiss
The clamour from your hearts, ‘tis true
I have a new love not a drunken tool.
This enchanted fluid brings forth energy
So strong I am in a strange befuddlery,
How can a simple bean provide
A drink so wondrous that an apothecary
Would be charged with witchcraft for it?
I know not but it is for me.

LOVED THIS ONE. HERE IS MY RETORT!

Coffee Retort!

(To the tune of The Wizard Of Oz!)

Half and Half in mine please,
While we poetically assemble
And my shaking fingers tremble,
Till the caffeine gives a start.
While my lips start to quiver
And my body gives a shiver
Please pour some coffee
In my cup!
I see you already have yours
And you like to drink it black sir,
But I really need the cream.
If I don’t have it, it’s too bitter
And I hate to be a quitter,
So let’s go and find a cow!
So here’s to you my new friend
You can read your poem again then,
You may pause to take a sip,
You should have blown across the top
I tried to warn you friend to stop,
Now you’ve gone and burnt your lip!
