He pushes a cart filled to the tip-top
He smells of hot trash, and is layered with clothes
He screams at cars and yet nobody knows
Everybody sees him, yet we look right thru
For he is a problem we cannot control
He is a problem yet he has a soul
For he has a name, he even has a face behind that thick maine
What is his story?
What lead him here?
Probably has to do with drugs or beer
Perhaps he's a wretched dope fein thief
Maybe thats why he's missing he's teeth
Try to avoid all that you can
But you know you see him digging for cans
Maybe he's a man who has lost everything
First he's wife, then his kids then he went insane
No insurance to save him
no family ties
He pushes his cart alone and cries
You wont approche him because he smells and yells
Praying for a cop to put him jail
not for a crime, but because he's in hell
He's just a man on the corner
Thats all that he'll be
Would you give him a dime?
Or would you give him a penny? [comments] => 2 [counter] => 167 [topic] => 66 [informant] => simplysublime [notes] => [ihome] => 0 [alanguage] => [acomm] => 0 [haspoll] => 0 [pollID] => 0 [score] => 0 [ratings] => 0 [editpoem] => 1 [associated] => [topicname] => drugabuse )

'Spare Change' is a very real and very descriptive and very well-written poem. Whose heart doesn't go out these souls -- me I look a little -- I give better than spare change. But I don't invite him home with me. Fresh in my mind still Phil Ochs singing: 'There, but for fortune, go you and !. you and I.'
