Innocent eyes touched not by western skies!
Bare feet run on stony ground.
Cotton dresses run with determination.
Running down the will to survive, roads
Built by thieves waiting to strip the valley
Of all that rightly belongs, to the feet
Of those who plough the land,
Who thresh the corn,
Who process the tef,
Who feed the cries,
Uncomplaining eyes!

And colour streams through the mountains
Carried by skin that knows the strength of
African Sun.
Skin that brings a rainbow of delight to the
Eyes of those who should only ever, be under
The beauty of the ceremonial umbrella.
And a tiny hand stretches out in hope
To reach a heart of compassion,
Of kindness.
Who sees through the barrier of taking advantage.
Who sees humanity!

And we walk through rivers and irrigation,
And we walk through fields of gold!
And we see the minds of progression.
Hungry!
To learn,
To achieve,
To walk with pride!

And my heart melts.
And their faces smile!
And my arms embrace their fight.

It's this thing, this condition of the world that, at times, makes me feel like we're already in hell.

I have missed your poetry. Excellent, this one is.

Tim

Hi Anna,

I would guess that this poem is drawn from
you experiencing an almighty cultural shock!
There are, unfortunately, many underveloped
countries where Hope, Ambition, and
Opportunity exists only in dictionaries.
You captured it here quite brilliantly.
Well said!

Tommy
